Macro Minerals & its importance

What are Minerals?

Minerals are important for your body to stay healthy. The body require essential nutrients to grow, develop and work together in perfect harmony. These essential nutrients, those that your body needs but cannot produce, include the inorganic substances found in foods known as minerals.. Minerals are also important for making enzymes and hormones. There are two kinds of minerals: macrominerals and trace minerals. You need larger amounts of macrominerals. They include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride and sulfur. You only need small amounts of trace minerals. They include iron, manganese, copper, iodine and zinc. We will dicuss the importance of important minerals in our body in this article. Minerals are inorganic substances required by the body in small amounts for a variety of different functions. Minerals are involved in the formation of bones and teeth, they are essential constituents of body fluids and tissues and they also help in normal nerve function.

What are the different types of micro minerals? what are their uses?

Calcium
Your body needs calcium to build strong bones and teeth. Calcium also plays a role in nerve transmissions and muscle function. Calcium (Ca) is the most abundant mineral in the body and is essential for a number of vital functions. Deficiency of Calcium can lead to low bone density.
Food sources: Milk, cheese, yogurt, Bread, green leafy vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage, kale, fortified soya products and fish such as tinned salmon and whitebait.

Phosphorus:
Phosphorus plays an important role in building strong bones and teeth, producing proteins the body needs and repairing cells.
Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the body. It also plays an important role in energy metabolism, helps filter out waste in the kidneys, and promotes the growth, maintenance and repair of all tissues and cells.
Food sources: Phosphorus is abundant in red meat, dry fruits, yoghurt, eggs, fish, legumes, dairy products, fish, poultry, bread, rice and oats.

Magnesium:
Magnesium is an essential mineral present in all human tissues, especially in bone. It is needed for the activation of many enzymes. It helps manage muscle and nerve function, control blood glucose levels and regulate blood pressure.
Food sources: Sources include green leafy vegetables like spinach, legumes, milk, cereal, whole grains, seedsnuts, bread, fish, meat and dairy products.

Sodium
Sodium stimulates nerve and muscle function, maintain the correct balance of fluid in the cells and support the absorption of other nutrients including chloride, amino acids and glucose. Sodium is responsible for regulating body water content and electrolyte balance. However, many people get more sodium than they need, and too mucH sodium can increase blood pressure, which raises the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Food sources: Table salt (sodium chloride), cheese, salted nuts, bread, cereal, pickles and sauces.

Potassium
Potassium is essential for water and electrolyte balance and the normal functioning of cells, including nerves. Increased dietary intakes of potassium may cause a decrease in blood pressure. Your body also needs it to build proteins, break down and use carbohydrates, maintain the pH balance of the blood and support normal growth. Potassium helps your nerves and muscles communicate, moves nutrients into cells and waste products out of them, and helps regulate blood pressure.
Food sources: Potassium is present in some fruits, such as blackberries, grapes, oranges, grapefruit and bananas, leafy green vegetables spinach , root vegetables such as carrots and potatoes, meat, fish, shellfish, nuts, seeds, pulses and milk.

Though food can provide essential minerals it is sometimes not sufficients and mineral supplement are required.
